William R. (Red) Alford

Sadly, William ''Red'' Alford died on May 29, 2003, aged 65, after suffering from a brain tumour .
Born in Canton, Miss., he was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., a doctorate in mathematics from Tulane University in 1963. The thesis title was Some Wild Embeddings of the One and Two Dimensional Spheres in the Three Sphere, supervisor Gail Young Jr.
He also obtained a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.
He had served on the UGA mathematics faculty, practiced law in Athens and returned to the university mathematics faculty, retiring in 2002.
He achieved fame with then UGA colleagues Andrew Granville and Carl Pomerance on proving that there are infinitely many Carmichael numbers.
